Here are our favorite spots to find the best fall colors:
1. Hope Valley: Just a short, beautiful drive on Highway 88 from South Lake Tahoe, Hope Valley is famous for its breathtaking aspen groves. The entire valley erupts in a brilliant spectrum of yellows and golds. You can simply drive through and enjoy the view, or for a more immersive experience, park at a trailhead and wander through the rustling leaves.
2. The Flume Trail: While this east shore trail is famous for its stunning lake views, it’s also a great spot to see fall foliage. As you bike or hike this iconic singletrack above Incline Village, you’ll passthrough pockets of shimmering aspens, creating a beautiful contrast against the deep blue of Lake Tahoe. The views from this trail are truly unparalleled.
3. Scenic Drive on Highway 89 (The West Shore): A leisurely drive along the West Shore is a fall must-do. Starting from Tahoe City and heading south toward Emerald Bay, you’ll be treated to a mix of changing leaves and sparkling lake views. The area near Sugar Pine Point State Park and Meeks Bay is especially lovely, with golden aspens glowing against the backdrop of towering pines.
4. The Truckee River Bike Path: For an easier, more accessible option, the Truckee River Bike Path is perfect. The path winds along the river, with the trees providing a beautiful tunnel of fall color. It’s an easy, flat walk or ride that’s great for the whole family, and the sound of the flowing water makes for a serene autumn experience.
5. Taylor Creek Visitor Center – South Lake Tahoe: This is a fantastic place to see fall colors and witness one of nature’s most incredible spectacles—the annual Kokanee salmon run. Each fall, the Lake Tahoe Kokanee salmon turn a brilliant red and swim up Taylor Creek to spawn. You can see them up close at the Visitor Center’s Stream Profile Chamber, a unique viewing area with aquarium windows that lets you see a cross-section of the creek and the fish in action.
Finally, If you’re up for a bit of a drive, some other beautiful spots in Northern California that put on an incredible fall show include Quincy and the Eastern Sierras near Convict Lake and Bishop Creek. The aspens in these areas are absolutely magnificent.
